To celebrate the release of their new single ‘Empire’ Alpines played a gig on a rooftop garden in Dalston which featured barbecued sausage, homemade punch and a screening of ‘Romeo & Juliet.’ A pretty standard single launch party then eh?
The band played a short but wonderful set to the sold out crowd who were apparently quite a few friends of the band which seemed to be true as there was a lovely friendly ambience running through the crowd.
The set consisted of previous singles ‘Drive’ and ‘Cocoon’ (you know, the one that XXXY did that stunning remix of) as well as a cover of Prince’s ‘When Doves Cry’ which suited singer Catherine Pockson’s silky voice marvelously as did the beautiful backdrop of London at sunset and her elegant attire.
The band finished on new single ‘Empire’ before coming on for what seemed like an unexpected encore of a song called ‘Fossilize.’ Although Catherine described the band as a “night time pop” band, I couldn’t really fault the choice of venue. It was a really nice, intimate evening which I wouldn’t have had any other way. Can we have more rooftop gigs please??
